From the Head of Year 10

Term 1 has passed extremely fast and who can believe we are just a few days away from the Easter holidays.

Last week we saw 141 of our Year 10 students participate in work experience. This is a great experience for the students to get a feel for what is involved in a career pathway they may wish to pursue. Being the first time for most students to be out in the workplace, the response from businesses and students has been overwhelmingly positive. I encourage all students to continue to participate in their Skills for Work class, working towards competence to gain their certificate.

Throughout the term, we have had various school-wide positive behaviour for learning focuses. It is great to see so many of our Year 10 students follow our school’s policies and procedures around uniforms and attendance, and continue to show positive behaviour in and out of the classroom.

I wish everyone a very happy and safe Easter and I look forward to seeing everyone after the holidays.

Miss Jacinda Fehlhaber
Year 10 HOY.

Head of Department

From Head of Department – Arts

My name is Miss Ferrara and I am the Head of Department – Arts and Indigenous Education at ESHS this year. It has been a great first term with ‘busy work’ inside and outside the classroom. So, what has kept the staff and students in the Arts/Indigenous Education Faculty so busy this term?

ARTS (Year 7)

Students presented their Drama Performance in front of a live audience of excited primary school students. At present, students are completing specific tasks (e.g. colour wheel, sketching techniques etc.) for their Art Portfolio.

MUSIC (Year 9)

Students composed a fusion piece (two styles of music ‘fused together’ to create an original piece of music). Students are also analysing Bohemian Rhapsody and starting to investigate possible songs to perform for their assessment next term.

SENIOR MUSIC

Students investigated contemporary music trends and presented their findings. Students performed a piece of contemporary music in front of their class.

JUNIOR ART

Students completed a mixed media artwork for their assessment.

SENIOR ART

Students investigated puppetry and presented their findings in their art journals. Students completed a drawing portfolio.

JUNIOR DRAMA

Students devised a script and then took on the role of a director, and presented them in front of their class.

SENIOR DRAMA

Students investigated Epic Theatre, analysed The Caucasian Circle and then completed their Drama Performance of a scene from this stimulus. Year 11 students have watched their stimulus and they will begin to create their dramatic concept based around storytelling.

JUNIOR MEDIA

Students analysed gender representation within advertisements and created a blog.

SENIOR FILM/TV/NEW MEDIA

Students are designing a music video and short film, as well as completing case study work.

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

We have submitted the NAIDOC 2019 Funding Application to assist with our planning of NAIDOC 2019 Activities at ESHS. We have completed QATSIF paper work for our senior indigenous students. We are assisting students with their class work and assessment completion. We attended a Cultural Connections meeting and the initial planning stage has commenced.

MUSICAL REHEARSALS

Students have been rehearsing every Wednesday afternoon, not to mention two weekend rehearsals, and Act 1 is blocked and major ‘song and dance’ numbers blocked and choreographed. It is looking great! Half of Act 2 is blocked and most of the finale ‘song and dance’ is blocked and choreographed. Very exciting!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Students have been attending their weekly instrumental lessons as well as their respective band rehearsals. They performed at this year’s Senior Induction and they are preparing for our ANZAC Day Service in the first week of next term.

ART CLUB

It runs every Monday during First Break in G2. All students are welcome. It is a space where students can create an ‘art work’ of their choosing or learn an art technique of interest.

FILM CLUB

It runs every Thursday during First Break in K9. All students are welcome. It is a space where students can come and watch PG rated movies and have ‘film focussed’ discussions. Please see the table below:

MUSIC CLUB

It runs every Wednesday during First Break in K1. All students are welcome. It is a space where students can learn to play a piece of music of their choice or practice a piece of music they are working on.

Save The Date

Before I sign off, please see the following SAVE A DATE details:

  • MUSICAL FUNDRAISER TRIVIA NIGHT Friday 17 May at ESHS in our UCA (stay tuned for details in the first week of next term)

Instrumental Music News

It has been a busy term for our Instrumental music students. Symphonic Band has welcomed ten grade 7s into the band. It has been a huge learning curve but I am pleased how well the new students are adjusting to the demands of the band, and learning much harder repertoire.

Symphonic Band will be travelling to Brisbane in October to compete at Musicfest, which is the largest band competition in the Southern Hemisphere. Our band has an excellent track record at this competition. Students have been working very hard at the set piece for the competition.

Jazz Band has welcomed 6 new players also, and all students are working well. So far this year we have rehearsed over 30 pieces.

Currently we have over 60 students in the Instrumental Music Program. We have many new students who are learning an instrument for the first time. All students are progressing well. It is great to see so much enthusiasm from the students as they navigate their way through reading music for the first time.

SHEP

State Honours Ensemble Program is an initiative of Griffith University and runs music camps throughout Queensland. Two camps were held in Rockhampton during March. Congratulations to the following students who were accepted to attend.

SHEP Middle School

Amber Collie, Lillian Goodwin, Cloe Egerton, Lauren Green

SHEP Capricornia

Eve Agius, Savannah Bruton

All students had a wonderful time, playing alongside musicians from throughout Central Queensland.

SHEP Queensland Congratulations to Dani Challacombe who has been accepted to attend SHEP QLD in Brisbane in October. This is the second year running that Dani has been accepted to attend. This camp involves the best high school students from across Queensland. Dani has also been invited to audition for AHEP (Australian Honours Ensemble Program). This camp is for the best musicians from across Australia. Good luck Dani on your audition.

Congratulations to all students for their many successes.

TOPOLOGY

In some very exciting news our school has been chosen to participate in the TOP UP program. Topology is a professional music group and resident artists at Brisbane Powerhouse. Topology has released 15 albums, produced countless works and have toured extensively both nationally and internationally. They were nominated for an ARIA award in 2014 for best classical album.

On Tuesday ten very lucky instrumental music students attended a composition and improvisation workshop run by John Babbage (founding member of Topology). Students were challenged to make up a short tune on their instrument. As a group the students worked together to make all of their parts fit into a composition. Topology will return to Emerald in May for another workshop.

Our students will then perform their composition alongside Topology at a public performance to be held at Emerald Cinema Complex on May 13. John was very impressed with our students and is confident our composition will be something special. What a great honour for our school to be chosen for the TOP UP program.

FESTIVAL OF BANDS

Over 20 students have nominated to participate at Festival of Bands to be held 9-11 May. Best of Brass will be the resident artists. Students will be involved in rehearsals over the 3 days culminating in a Gala concert to be held at Emerald Town Hall on Saturday 11 May.

Symphonic Band will be performing at our school Anzac Day Service on Wednesday 24 April along with the return of “Drumline”.

I am looking forward working with all students in Term 2.

Technology News

The first term of 2019 is almost over, and I would like to say our department is heading forward. Noel Cavanagh (Acting Head of Technology) has spread a new life into the department by assigning teachers a leading role to keep and manage each working environment clean for everyone to work in. There has also been a lot of decluttering of unwanted projects and machinery. This allows for each teacher and student to work and learn in a safe manner. Our staff are very supportive of each other and work well together.

On a different note, at Emerald State High School I and other Teachers have the pleasure of teaching many students who show respect not only to the teachers, but to their fellow classmates. (3Ps) I can speak of several occasions that at the end of a lesson several students come up to me and shake my hand and say thank you. This is clearly a true testament of parental attribute.

In the first term of 2019, my year 10 Engineering class have been manufacturing a drill gauge. To manufacture the drill gauge, students, must be able to reproduce a complete hand drawing of the drill gauge in detail. This allows the students to be able to mark out the gauge on a piece of flat bar. The students also had instructions on the correct and safe operations of a cold saw, drill press, and various metal hand tools. The drill gauge when completed will be mounted on a timber base.

Their next project will be to manufacture a metal Carry All out of Galvanized Iron. Once again students are required to be able to read engineering Drawings to complete the given task. While manufacturing the project into term two, the students will be introduced to several new machines and equipment.

Term one Year 10 Furnishing have been manufacturing a fold up camp chair that used mortice and tenon joints for the top and bottom rails. Students in term two will be moving on to manufacture a jewellery box using Pin/Box joints and in the process.

  • it’s their birthday

If so, a set routine can help:

  • attend school events in order to develop a relationship with the school and your child’s teachers
  • read the school newsletter
  • supervise homework
  • ask your child about their day
  • have a set time to go to bed and get out of bed
  • organise their uniform and school bag ready the night before
  • set a time for starting and finishing breakfast
  • set a time for daily homework activities including assessment
  • speak about school positively
  • be firm, send your child to school each and every day
