Principal’s Report.
Dear friends of Emerald High,
Week 2 in an unusual environment is underway. As a school we are continuing to learn and evolve the work we are doing to try and support our young people as well as we possibly can, but we are certainly all looking forward to the time that we have our students back and the school fully alive again. It is not the same when it is so empty!
Despite the restrictions of COVID, last week saw the school conduct our annual ANZAC Day ceremony in our Undercover Area with students and staff socially distanced. As usual, the service was respectful and moving, acknowledging the service of our servicemen and servicewomen both in the past and in the present. My sincere thanks to Leanne Ross for her dedication in planning and conducting the service and to Cheyenne Causton, Grace Chandler Ashe, Jade, Sam Luther, Michael Ross and Jett Wills who all played key roles in the service at very short notice. Finally, a thanks to Alarna Wills for magically 'live streaming' the service via Facebook.
Our wonderful PE staff, with Maggie Pembroke coordinating, have also been conducting physical activities during breaks, again with appropriate social distancing, to give the students who are at school access to physical activity in the absence of normal PE classes.
The school has also seen some new facilities work in recent weeks. The shelter shed between F and K blocks has been removed and replaced with a brand new structure that looks absolutely sensational. Some brand new watercoolers have been installed near the tuckshop, sponsored through a Commonwealth grant that was applied for by our P&C. A huge array of solar panels are being installed to make our school more energy-efficient and our fire system has been completely upgraded.
Some more exciting news - our new school website is up and going. It is much cleaner, sharper and easier to navigate. My very sincere thanks to Cristal Dougan, Charles New and Peter Corke for their work in making it a reality - it has been a big job!
Back to core business …
The next round of student work will be emailed out to students by next Tuesday (as Monday is a public holiday). I would encourage students to save the work as it arrives to their hard-drives, which means that they no longer need to access the internet unless they wish to email their teachers in return. This system helps get around the problems of slow internet speeds and the 'drop outs' that remains a state-wide problem.
Packages for families without computer access are being made available for collection from the school or from Rubyvale Post Office or Sapphire Post Office. Completed work can also be returned to any of these locations. We ask that, wherever possible, work be put into an envelope with the student's name, teachers' name/s and subject/s written clearly on the front.
A 'drop box' has been positioned outside the school office for any students who would like to return completed work to their teachers rather than emailing. This allows work to be returned whist maintaining social distancing. My thanks to Noel Cavanagh and the Industrial Technology team for their work in creating this feature.
We are currently following up on a few students who have not engaged with the teachers via email. Can I ask that all parents ensure that students check in at least weekly with their teachers and that they are submitting completed work as requested by their teachers. A reminder that teachers will be answering emails from students during normal scheduled lesson times.
Our super technician, Charles New, has been hard at work resurrecting some of our older laptops and getting then ready to loan out to families in need. Initially we have emailed families of students in Years 11 and 12 who have not access to computers. As more computers come on line, we will look at expanding this opportunity to other year levels as well.
I would again like to thank everyone for the way we have all worked together at this difficult time and have navigated the many pitfalls and obstacles along the way. I have been delighted with the many positive interactions we have had with families, albeit tinged with frustration at times. I do understand - it has not been easy.
Have a fantastic fortnight

Principal
From the Deputy Principal – Senior School.
Welcome back to Term 2 studies. This term is usually known for its shortness due to the many public holidays that occur within it. I think this year it will be known for a very different reason. I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding whilst we all navigate this new learning environment. I would like to reassure you all that we are committed to ensuring students in the senior school are on track for the future pathways of their choice.
QCE Tracking
Term 1 report cards were issued via email on the last day of Term 1. In the Senior School these reports give a good indication of whether a student is on track for a QCE.
For students at Emerald State High School to receive a QCE students must meet the following four conditions:
- Literacy – students must pass a unit of English subject (either English or Essential English)
- Numeracy – students must pass a unit of an Maths subject (General, Methods or Essential)
- 20 credits – students accumulate credits by banking 1 credit per subject each unit where a “C” grade or better is awarded
- Core Credits – 12 of the 20 credits must come from 3 subjects studied continuously (from Year 11 to Year 12).
For parents of students in the senior school you can assess your child’s eligibility by looking at the report card and checking:
- have they passed their Maths and English subject (C or better)
- have they passed 5 of their 6 subjects (5 subjects * 4 semesters = 20 credits).
If you have answered no to any of these then your child is at risk of not receiving a QCE and it is important that the situation is reviewed. Please contact the school to make a meeting time with me to discuss this situation
Year 11 Subject Changes
As the Year 11s are getting close to finishing their Unit 1 studies, now would be an appropriate time for them to start the subject change process. Students wanting to change either their English or Maths class should contact me via email (tshaw20@eq.edu.au) to start this process. If they are looking to change other subjects they need to discuss with their current teacher when Unit 1 ends and the new teacher for when Unit 2 starts.
Elevate study skills
Elevate education are consultants who come to the school each year to work with the seniors on study skills. They are offering a free webinar on Wednesday 6th May that gives practical strategies to parents on how to boost their child’s motivation, and keep them organised and engaged with their education whilst working online.

myQCE - Student Portal
The QCAA Student Portal holds all details regarding a student’s senior studies in one place. The portal records enrolments and results for subjects studied in Years 11 and 12 and all VET certificates. It is important that students regularly check their accounts to ensure that credits from courses are recorded correctly.
The Portal also gives students information on how they are tracking for a QCE. It has resources for jobs and careers as well as study tips. The portal also has a course that all senior students at ESHS must complete on Academic Integrity.
The online Academic Integrity course was to be completed by students in their English classes this term. This work will now be completed in the next 5 weeks. Students are asked to create their “Learning Account” and complete the courses online. I have attached “How to sheets” to help with this. Students will need to know their LUI number. This 10 digit number, can be found on top of their timetable or on the OneSchool account. If they have trouble accessing this information or getting into the website they should email Mrs Wills awill5001@eq.edu.au.
Once they have completed a course they must take a screen shot of the results and send it through to their English teacher. If you have any questions regarding this program contact me.
Formal/graduation/leadership
I understand that many students and families are anxious about the current global situation and how it will affect formal and graduation as well as the leadership process for 2021. At this stage we are still planning for these events to occur as scheduled before COVID-19 interrupt schooling.
Year 12 studies in 2020
Unit 3 and 4
Late last term, QCAA (the authority who oversees senior schooling) contacted schools outlining the changes that would occur for our current Year 12s in terms of assessment. QCAA had decided to remove an assessment piece from each subject syllabus. For some subjects this was dictated by QCAA; for others it was a school decision. The Heads of Department and I have met to discuss where applicable, what would be the best assessment to remove for our students in the current situation. I have attached for you a copy of our proposal for each subject. QCAA have also created some fact sheets for studying at home that I have also included. If you have any questions please let me know via email tshaw20@eq.edu.au.
External Exams
QCAA have published the external assessment timetable for 2020. I have included a copy of the timetable for your planning. These times are non-negotiable. Students studying these subjects are expected to attend their exams as scheduled. If you have any appointments or need to make appointments during this time can you please ensure that they do not clash with scheduled exams.

Mrs. Tanya Shaw
Deputy Principal – Senior School
From the Head of Year 8.
Dear Parents/ Carers
I hope you are well and enjoyed a relaxing Easter break with your family. As you are aware, students are learning from home for the first 5 weeks of Term 2. This will mean an adjustment for both teachers and students. It is important to be patient and understand that not everything will go to plan as predicted. Encourage your children to see this as an opportunity to develop resilience and work through new challenges.
After the first week, it has been encouraging to see so many students engaging with and completing online learning materials to a high standard. It is important that continuity of learning continues during this period and it is a credit to students that are rising to the challenge. Students should be contacting their specific subject teachers via email for assistance. Each teacher may have a preferred method of when completed tasks are sent to them and students should check with their individual teachers. For example, teacher of a specific subject may ask for completed work to be sent at the end of the week. Furthermore, teachers may send relevant answer sheets at the end of each week to assist students. Please ensure your child communicates with their teachers via email to acknowledge they have received work. In addition, completed work must be sent to teachers to ensure continuity of learning is occurring. It is an expectation that curriculum work is completed and teachers will be following school processes if work is not completed or incomplete. Teachers will continue to award VIVOs to students that are demonstrating the 3Ps at home.
Please encourage your children to set routines for their day-to-day activities. Routines can help to keep students focused and on track. It is also important that students, parents and carers are looking out for their own well-being during this time. Taking a break from technology, going for a walk, kicking a ball with siblings can assist with health and well-being. A positive attitude towards learning will help to support positive outcomes. Parents, carers and students should continue to support each other and work with their teachers to ensure quality learning continues and that students continue to have success in their learning.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself of Ben Van-Hees directly via email or phone.
Regards
Mr. Peter Sanson

HOY – 11
From the Maths team.
We are certainly living in unprecedented times. Our working lives are very strange and changing by the day as we upskill ourselves and our students about the online learning environment. The mathematics team has been working very hard to deliver learning materials via email and conventional mail since the end of Term 1 and have continued to deliver into Term 2. Probably our best online content from our maths team are our videos, which through feedback to teachers is helping our students to learn the best. These short explicit instructional videos are directly related to the lessons provided and are being created by both the team leaders of each subject and individual teachers if students within their classes have specific questions they cannot solve. At the end of each week, starting in Week 2 a quiz will be sent to students to check their understanding of subject matter for that week’s work. Students will then answer and send their responses via email to their teachers to be marked. A summary of learning materials for the start of Term 2 is as follows;
Junior:
- Year 7 are studying algebra, including substitution and identifying terms in equations
- Year 8 are studying index notation and index laws
- Year 9 are studying algebra including expanding and factorising
Year 10:
- Essentials are studying measurement including perimeter, area and volume
- General Mathematics are studying simple and compound interest
- Extension are studying equation solving and simultaneous equations
- Specialist are solving and rearranging equations
Year 11:
- Essential Mathematics using stem and leaf plots and data
- General Mathematics are solving simultaneous equations
- Mathematical Methods are studying circle and sideways parabola equations

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Unfortunately our band program has had major disruptions due to Covid-19. Both Jazz Band and Symphonic band ceased rehearsals in Week 8 of last term. Lessons continued to the end of Term 1. Presently Mrs Jones is delivering lessons via email through ‘The Learning Place’. Students have to submit video evidence of their set task by the end of each week. Students who are attending school are continuing with their lessons. Band Camp to Yeppoon in May has been cancelled. Take this situation as an incredible opportunity to enjoy having music in your lives. Keep practicing everyone.

Teacher – Arts
From the Languages team.
Welcome back to Term 2! We trust you had a relaxing holiday and a Happy Easter! This term in Languages will look slightly different due to learning online. As teachers we will be sending out a week’s worth of lessons for students to complete. Both Mr Neill and Mr Nguyen will be available and more than happy to answer and questions and clarifications via email. The Languages program this term has students studying a variety of topics across Years 7 – 9. These include:
Year 7 –“What is a Hero?”
- Students will reflect on their self-identities to create their own super hero profile.
Year 8 – “What’s in a Time Capsule?”
- Students will reflect on items that have personal, community or cultural significance. They will then explain why they should go into their “time capsule”
Year 9 – “What are Social Issues?”
- Students will explore social issues that affect Teenagers across the world, they will then choose and issue and create a presentation to raise awareness.
Year 10 – “What is the best job in the world”
- Students will plan and promote a job at a career fair, explore youth employment in Japan, create bilingual job advertisements, culminating in students responding to a Japanese job advertisement.
At this stage, assessment for Languages is due within weeks 7-9 of this term.
The best way to improve achievement is short but regular review of vocabulary. Particularly while students are away, use this time to learn Japanese writing symbols and new vocabulary, by regularly using Quizlet. Years 9 and 10 should be aiming to learn their hiragana and katakana as soon as feasible. Short bursts of regular review, will always be more effective than last minute cramming! 10 – 15 minutes, three or four times week is an excellent start.
Have a great Term – we look forward to hearing from all of our students while they are learning from home!
Regards
Mr. Riley Neill

In the SEP during Modified Art lessons, we have been working on finding colours in nature and also creating our very own Nature Mandalas from found objects. The students have been using leaves, pebbles, flower petals and sticks that they find around the school grounds, to assemble together to make an interesting composition. They focussed on making a small circle first and then building layers around it. We also went on a couple of mini-excursions around the school grounds, to observe the beauty in nature, and added to our collections, so as to create our very own works of art. Students enjoyed a scavenger hunt for coloured leaves, and we organised these leaves into the correct sequence to make a rainbow.

From the English team.
Despite the very different start to the Term, the English team are all ready to go, and excited about the transition to online learning. We have been working hard to ensure continuity of learning across both Junior and Senior English subjects. I would also like to welcome a new member to our English team, Mr Conor Ensor. He will be working with both English and Humanities.
Below, I have outlined what each cohort is currently engage with, so you may understand what your child should be currently learning and working towards.
Year 12 General
- Our Year 12 General English students are currently working on IA2, which is a persuasive piece based around a current issue in the media. Please be aware that the due date for this piece has moved from Week 3 to Week 6.
Year 12 Essentials
- Our Year 12s are currently investigating popular culture and the role of social groups in Australian culture, in preparation for IA4.
Year 11 Essentials
- Our Year 11 group are currently investigating workplace dynamics, and working through a variety of workplace documents in preparation for IA2: Work relationships and Work Safety.
Year 10 General
- Our Year 10 General English students are currently engaged in a range of different novel studies, including ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’, ‘The Book Thief’ and ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. They are particularly focusing on the in-depth themes and characters of these novels.
Year 10 Essentials
- Year 10 Essentials English are continuing our work on the novel ‘Holes’ that we began in Term 1. Students have been rereading the novel as they work on our assessment piece – a portfolio of work that investigates character perspective, descriptive writing and dialogue. Please be aware that due to the change to online learning, the due date to for this piece has been postponed to Week 6.
Year 9
- Year 9 English are currently engaged in a unit concerning speculative fiction in preparation for their next assessment piece. Students are reviewing their understanding of plot, character and descriptive language, so that they can produce their own short story.
Year 8
- The Year 8 Cohort have started this term by beginning their unit ‘Songs with a Message’. Students will be investigating the subject matter, message and language features of songs to analyse how the writer has constructed meaning through music. In Week 1, students focused in on figurative language devices, such as metaphor, simile and onomatopoeia, while in Week 2 we looked closer into how this devices create meaning.
Year 7
- Students in Year 7 began their unit on Myths late last term, and we continue to develop skills around creative writing this term. They have been looking at a variety of myths and legends to gain a better understanding of short stories, plot and descriptive language. They will receive an assessment surrounding these ideas later this term.
I realise that the changes that we are all experiencing this term can be quite daunting, but by working together we will all grow from this experience. I would like to encourage you to stay in contact with your child’s classroom teachers, and email them regarding any difficulties you or your child may be facing concerning English. We want to continue to work with you to ensure that every student at Emerald State High School experiences success.

From the Technology team.
We welcome Term 2 Week 1 with open arms (or is that not considered social distancing) in the Technologies Department. We also say a big warm welcome to our latest recruit Mr Byron Davis who applied his trade in Cambodia, building schools and upskilling the community. Plus, we welcome back Mr Ed Hansen. In the Technologies department we embrace challenges and invent ourselves through change.
Year 8 & 9 Design & Technology
- The Year 8 Design & Technology class finished their Technology stands and I must say, some of those stands are fit to be retailed at BIG W. Also our Year 9 DAT class impressed with really unique designs with their serving tray…tea anyone?
Year 11 Furnishing
- The Year 11 Furnishing is going along nicely with their dartboard cases and hopefully by the end of this Term most of the learners should be finished and ready to sell their dartboards to the highest bidder…it’s tough times; to hustle a bit is not a crime.
Year 12 Furnishing
- Moving on. Mr Cavanagh, when can we expect the Cape Cod Chairs (Year 12 Furnishing) to be varnished and ready for marketing? I have staff members lining up to get their hands on one of those masterpieces just in time for summer.
Year 9 & 10 Graphics
- The Year 9 and 10 Graphics class have really impressed Term 1 by learning new skills on AutoCAD and implementing design processes. They are currently busy with pictorial (3D) drawings which should challenge them quite a bit.
Year 11 & 12 Design
- In our senior classes the Year 11s are busy with landscaping and redesign as well as sustainability, whilst our Year 12s are still engaged with Human Centred Design (AI2).
Year 10 ITD
- This term the Year 10 learners will shift their focus to sustainability as well and will put their skills to work in creating a technologies organiser.
Year 10, 11 and 12 Engineering
- Moving onto our engineers-to-be our main objectives in Year 10 this term is making a carry-all and drill gage. Whilst the Year 11s are more focussed on producing a Barbeque and the Year 12s getting to grips with an engineering vice. Good luck!
Mr. Corke’s classes
- Year 12 Information Technology: Animation skills
- Year 9 - 11 Digital Technology: Desktop publisher and Magazines
- Year 7 & 8 Design and Technology: Computer networking and data paths.
A big thank you to Ms. Kathleen Weis for being our Human Google in E4, without you some of us would run around like headless chickens. Also, thank you to Mr. Jordan Greenfell (Teacher Aid) for organizing and sorting our workshops on a regular basis. You have been a welcome addition to what essentially is… the building blocks of ESHS.
Remember, Technology is King and we are his slaves….or are we?
