Principal’s Report
Dear friends of Emerald High
It has been sensational this week to have our Year 11s and 12s back in the school and back into learning after their unwelcome and unexpected extended Easter break. Our teachers are now working with them to review and catch up their work and then continue on with their studies.
Our staff have been continuing to enhance our online learning environment with the new 'Student Portal' soon to be available for use. The 'Student Portal', is the home page for students logging onto computers at school and we are currently working with our website developers to create a direct link from our website. The portal contains links to learning resources for subjects that have been posted by class teachers along with links to other relevant sites and resources. It aims to be a one-stop-shop for our students to let them access all they need. Stay tuned for more!
Teachers are currently revising assessment calendars for all students to ensure that they accurately reflect the adjustments that we have made to support our students' learning. We will advise everyone via Facebook when they are ready to be accessed.
Next Monday will see the final round of work provided for students after which we are very hopeful we will see everyone back here in Week 6 and normal learning can resume for everyone.
I sincerely hope that everyone has enjoyed some of the amazing posts on Facebook lately, including the PBL video created by Miss Pembroke and Miss Prior and the 'Day for Dolly' video produced by our school leaders.
More facilities work will be underway shortly at the school with roof repairs and replacement carpet being installed in F Block.
With the cooler weather approaching and students needing to keep warm, I would like to remind everyone that the only permitted jumpers are either school jackets/jumpers or plain black or emerald green jumpers with no logos (and without hoods). A diagram showing appropriate jumpers can be found later in the newsletter.
Knowing that it can sometimes be tricky for parents to locate suitable clothing, we have contacted a number of our local businesses including Big W, Best 'n Less and Peter Taylor Sewing Centre who have advised that they do currently have plain black jumpers available with no hoods in varying sizes.
Once again, a huge 'thank you' to everyone as we have worked together to navigate a difficult time in our history. It will be great when everything returns to normal!
“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn…”
Have a fantastic fortnight

From the Deputy Principal – Middle School
Students in Years 9 & 10, along with those in Years 7 & 8, are working online with their teachers. This is whether they are working at home, or if they at school due to parents being essential workers. As a result, students have been allocated a room to work in and have access to computers, or if not, they have been provided with paper copies.
With three weeks of working from home, students should have emailed their teachers or dropped off their completed work at either ESHS, Sapphire or Rubyvale Post Offices.
Parents can you check with your children to ensure they have returned work that was requested by their teachers.
PBL – uniform reminder
A reminder that with the cooler weather upon us, that students who are attending school need to be in correct school uniform (especially jumpers). A reminder that hoodies, including Central Highlands Footy Jumpers, are NOT a part of our uniform. ESHS tracksuit tops, or plain black or green jumpers are the only jumpers allowed. Students not in correct uniform will be asked to change for the duration of the day. Furthermore, labelling your clothing can assist with finding lost property, as students tend to shed their jumpers as the afternoons warm up.
Year 10 subject changes
All students in Year 10 are reminded that all subject changes must be finalised by Friday 15 May (this week). Parents are to email me at gsaun25@eq.edu.au requesting the change and agreeing to any costs that may be involved. I was pleased to see the initiative shown by many of the Year 10s who sent me an email asking what options they have and then proceeded to talk to the Guidance Officer and their parents to finalise these changes.

Mrs. Gaye Saunders
Deputy Principal – Middle School
From the Head of Year 9
As we are looking at a Week 6 return, students are encouraged to continue to participate in online learning. If there are questions about the work that is sent home, students are welcome to contact their classroom teacher via email. It is recommended that students follow their timetable to keep a routine in place. Study club will be back running for students who are in need of support. Students just need to ensure that they are asking their classroom teacher to meet with them beforehand. This will occur on Wednesday from 3pm-4pm.
Even though students are not in the classroom, it is still an expectation that the 3Ps are being followed in regards to online learning. Students are required to be polite, prepared and to participate in lessons, even if they are not present in the classroom. If everyone follows these rules, the rest of the term will run very smoothly and the transition back to the classroom will be a lot easier.
In closing, I’d like to acknowledge the hard work that the Year 9s are putting in. They have showed great resilience in these uncertain times. It is a pleasure to see.
“Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.”― Gever Tulley.
Stay safe and I can’t wait to see you all back at school!

From the Head of Year 10
What an interesting term it has been so far! I hope that students are making the most of online learning. Remember during these times it is crucial for students to continue contacting their teachers. Whether it be checking in, sending through work or asking for help. Teachers are there to support students to succeed!
It is also really important for students to focus on their health and wellbeing. This cannot be forgotten during these times. I hope they are consuming a balanced diet, exercising at least 30 minutes a day and maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
I would like to wish everyone support for the next few weeks, with hope students will be back on campus in a few weeks’ time.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Have a great fortnight.
Regards
Miss. Chloe Prior
HOY – 10
From the Maths team
All Year 12 classes this term have an end of year exam. It has been good to see such great online participation in mathematics classes since the beginning of the term. Students have been participating very well in maths classes by seeking help in their own time and completing their work to the best of their ability. It is great to see our students engaged in mathematics and being able to see the value in strong mathematical skills.
This is an exciting time as much of the content being taught across the maths classes is brand new to them and concepts they have never come across before. Such topics are “confidence intervals” for mathematical methods and “Annuities” and “Perpetuities” for general maths.
With regards to the Year 11 students, as a reminder, it is crunch time for them to put in everything they can to this final term of Semester 1. Ensuring they are working hard now will put them in good stead for next semester. Furthermore, now is the time to evaluate the success achieved in their current maths subject.
As for our junior students, the Year 7s are currently learning about algebra, involving one step equations and backtracking method, while the Year 8s are exploring index notations, with algebra at the end. Our Year 9s have begun their exploration of binomial expansion, followed by probability.
There is still time for each student to improve their achievement, effort and behaviour grades before the end of the semester. Teachers from all departments have been working together to develop whole-school strategies for improving numeracy skills.
Good Luck for the rest of the term!
Regards
Mr. Indervir Singh

It is important students are participating in a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise each day. This can be as simple as going for a walk, throwing/kicking a ball, fitness circuits, etc. Teachers are still supplying PRAC lessons that students should complete. Keep up the good work during these trying times!

From the Languages team
We hope you have settled into a comfortable routine with Learning@Home or Online@School.
At this stage, assessment for Languages are due within Weeks 7-9 of this term. However, scaffolding and extra provisions will be made to ensure that no students in Japanese are disadvantaged due the interruptions COVID-19 has given to our way of learning!
A gentle reminder, the best way to improve achievement is short but regular review of vocabulary. Use this time to learn Japanese writing symbols and new vocabulary, by regularly using Quizlet. Years 9 and 10 should now be developing their skills in using hiragana and katakana! If you have not attempted this, please try this as soon as feasible. Short bursts of regular review, will always be more effective than last minute cramming! 10 – 15 minutes, three or four times a week is an excellent start.
Have a great Term – we look forward to hearing from all of our students while they are learning from home and we hope to see you all back in Week 6!

From the SEP team
Hi all, I hope the term is going well with our different mode of learning. This very different style of learning and has required lots of changes in routine and communicating. If this is not your preferred style, and you are having trouble getting used to this, remember it is not forever.
Many of our senior students are currently working on their QCIA (Qld Certificate of Individual Achievement) folio tasks. Other students are working on a range of tasks for all 8 Key Learning Areas. I hope that in between the online and paper tasks you have, you are still finding time to keep up your reading skills and enjoying your hobbies. It has been fantastic to see the work samples and photos returned to the school showing how the students have been completing the activities. In particular, the gardening tasks and the cooking skills being practised at home are skills for life. We have noticed a significant improvement in some student’s ability to send emails to their teachers. We are loving the attachments that the students are adding and that the messages are easy to understand and in an appropriate format. There is nothing like a real context to teach these skills. The more practise, the better our students will get. These are skills used frequently for work and personal use, so building confidence with this is so important. Plus, the teachers love hearing from them.
When all students return to school, please send back your completed work pack as well as any tasks you have not yet completed. The completed tasks will be added into their folio of work, which is also their assessment piece for some subjects. Others will be glued into student’s workbooks as evidence of achievement in that subject. Any work the students have had difficulty with and have not yet completed, we can do together upon their return.
We very much look forward to the day that we are all back in the classroom together, but until then, keep doing the best you can. Please do not stress if you find something you can’t do yet. Once we are all back at school, we will work on it then.
Take care and please keep in touch by email or phone.
Regards
