Principal’s Report.
Dear Friends of Emerald High,
The term is rolling on!
Our Subject Information Night was conducted this week and I thank everyone who attended to discover more about subjects and other important school information. I also thank Tanya Shaw and all of our school staff for the time and effort they went to make this occasion a success.
The basketball courts are open and are getting lots of use! We have also constructed and opened up some new shaded seating areas around the school. There are 12 new picnic tables around the school with 12 more on the way and the Student Representative Council are also looking at outdoor table-tennis tables and chess tables. Lots of things happening for our young people!
Some of our Maths teachers recently led an online education program for teachers from Thailand, modelling for them quality teaching practices in the field of mathematics. Our school was invited by the International Education branch in Brisbane to do this as the quality of our teachers is well recognised. We are indeed very lucky as we have some of the best and most dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff around!
Mr Bhar led the district Mathematics competition this week with our students competing against 14 other teams with student from a number of schools around us, both state and private. I am delighted to announce that our students won 1st and 3rd places in the competition! Well done to:
- ESHS Team 1: Trent Latham, Lucy Shaw and Indiana Elliott (Winning Team)
- ESHS Team 2: Jayden, Nithi Ezhil Kotran, and Cooper Mann. (Placing 3rd)
This is an amazing achievement and further testament to the quality of our young people and our teachers!
Yet more amazing student achievements - Carlene Caro in Year 9 has won first place in a Regional Japanese speaking competition, against some quality competition and Sienna in Year 7 also participated with a quality presentation. Great work girls!
Our teams have recently played 7s Rugby and Cricket against local schools and I have been impressed, as I always am, with the level of competition and sporting spirit displayed by our young people.
Thank you to all parents who continue to support us through ensuring students are in correct uniform and helping us present a quality face to our community. A reminder that students may wear plain black jumpers to school, provided they have no logos or hoods and that local stores have suitable fleecy polo neck and crew neck jumpers in town for between $12 and $20. Students in incorrect uniform will be required to change into one from the pool of spare uniforms that we have available, all of which are washed before being loaned out.
Finally, I spoke with the students on assemblies last week about using manners as part of our PBL focus. I congratulated them on the positive way that the vast majority of them interact with each other and with our staff. The courtesy of our students and way they will say "hello" and stop for a chat is one of the wonderful characteristics of our school and helps make it a great place to be.
Doubt whom you will, but never yourself.
- Christian Nestell Bovee.
Have a fantastic fortnight

PBL Focus
Our current focus is “Use manners”. It has been pleasing to see and hear this in our students.
RIPPLE EFFECT Awards
This initiative of the Student Council has been well received and students can nominate their peers for following the 3Ps here at school. These are given out fortnightly by the student leaders on Year level assemblies.
Year 10 Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways
During these classes, students should have completed the first 4 tabs; INTENDED LEARNING, PERSONAL (A reflection of their own OneSchool account (as only they are able to edit this)!
VIVO
Part of our positive reward system at ESHS, is our VIVO program. Each time a student gets a VIVO from a staff member, they are in fact receiving 5 points. Once the student has accrued 250 points – this equates to $5. So, 500 points = $10. Students can “save” this for senior rewards, such as putting towards the cost of their senior jersey or formal, or can purchase vouchers that they can redeem from local businesses, as well as ESHS Bites, or from the VIVO store.
Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination
All Year 10s should who were at school on 22 July, 2021 have received their vaccination. Catch-up for students who were absent will be in Term 4.
Subject Selection Evening
This event was held on Tuesday 3 August. Thank you to all the parents who were able to come and take advantage of the opportunity to speak with staff and recieve information about VET, QCE and how to choose subjects for 2022. For all parents of current Year 9 and 10 students, the information presented by Mrs Stefaniuk, Mrs Shaw and Mrs Saunders will be emailed to parents.
Emails from Staff
Please ensure that you check your JUNK mailbox as sometimes this is where emails from @eq.edu.au end up.

From the Head of Year 10
Welcome back to the second half of the year! Time has flown.
At the end of last term, parents and caregivers would have received the semester report where students were awarded an academic, behaviour and effort grade. It was awesome to see students achieving performing highly across all areas. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to email or call the subject teacher for clarification.
Year 11 and 12 are fast approaching and subject selections are happening soon. Students have had the opportunity to hear from Heads of Departments about subjects offered in senior and future pathways. If your student has any questions about subjects and pre-requisites, I would recommend that they go and speak to that subject HOD as soon as possible.
It has been great to see a range of students participating in a number of different extra-curricular activities. These are a great way of being involved in the community, showcasing skills, finding new talent or even making new friends. I would encourage all Year 10 students to carefully listen to the notices in PC every morning to ensure that they do not miss out on opportunities to participate.
In closing, I would like to remind all Year 10 students to continue following the 3Ps and try their best in everything they do! You never know what great opportunities could be lurking around the corner. In the words of Michael Jackson “SOME PEOPLE WANT IT TO HAPPEN, SOME WISH IT WOULD HAPPEN, OTHERS MAKE IT HAPPEN” Thanks for a great start to the term!
Regards

With the upcoming census looming, now is a great time to discuss data and statistics with your child. There’s so much data available to us at the Australian Bureau of Statistics website. Question: How does Emerald compare to the rest of Queensland?

Homework Help
It doesn’t take a lot to help our budding mathematicians succeed in their schooling. Reviewing their notes from class and finishing off any work that they didn’t complete in class can make a big difference when it comes to succeeding at Maths. Even just practising times tables can make a huge difference in class.

Last weekend, Moreton and McIndoe Park were flooded with the best Rugby 7’s players in the Central Highlands, as students competed in the annual Western 7’s competition. ESHS staff members eagerly cheered on our students who competed in U13, U15 and OPEN age groups in multiple games, over the two days. All students should be super proud of their efforts as they wore the green, gold and blue jerseys with pride.
Congratulations to the U15 Boys who received runners – up, and the U15 and OPEN girls who were crowned WINNERS!
A super special congratulations are in order for Hady Whittaker and Olivia Cave who received player of the tournament for their respective age groups. An incredible achievement.

Teacher
From the Humanities team.
Junior students have swapped their Humanities subjects this semester – all classes who were studying History last semester are now studying Geography, and likewise all students in the Geography classes are now studying History.
This year, all senior Humanities classes attended an excursion to Brisbane. Geography students have annually participated in a number of activities relating to their subject and data collection for their assessment. This year, they visited the environmental centre to monitor the erosion rates along the Nudgee Coast, as well as having the opportunity if getting close and friendly with a resident python. Once again, the Legal Studies students had a remarkable opportunity to visit the District & Supreme Court to watch actual cases proceed through the system. They also, for the first time, visited Boggo Road Goal, which had been closed since 1989. Legal students undoubtedly walked the furthest of the three disciplines to travel to Brisbane. Modern and Ancient History students split their time between the Abbey Museum, where they engaged in a Roman themed archaeological dig and the mummification of one of the students. The next day the history students visited the Victoria Barracks to speak to Vietnam veterans after visiting the Lego display and back storerooms of the Queensland Museum. On Wednesday they were lucky to have a university style lecture and pizza at UQ. On Thursday, Geography and History students visited QUT for a quick tour while the Legal Studies students choose to return to the courts to watch the arrest hearings of criminals caught in Brisbane the day before. After a quick last opportunity shop at DFO, we all flew home – thankfully a week before the COVID-19 restrictions kicked in. It was a great opportunity for our students to explore their options and further their studies in a positive way, and with the success of this year, we can’t wait to take the students again next year.

This month we are looking at helping out with the Smash Colour Run, happening in September, by providing a bit of entertainment.
New and old members are encouraged to come to the meetings K1 during First Break on Mondays and Wednesdays. It doesn’t really matter if you can sing or not, as the good thing about a Glee Club is that enthusiasm is more important.
