Principal’s Report.

Dear Friends of Emerald High,

We have had an action-packed few weeks at Emerald High!

Our Athletics Carnival was held last week and I was again impressed by the conduct of our amazing young people and the high levels of participation. A huge well done to Ms Johnson and the HPE/Languages faculty and to the Student Representative Council for their support as well.

Some fantastic sporting news - we had a number of teams participating in the Vicki Wilson Netball Cup last week with outstanding results. The open boys won and are the state representatives for the Capricorn Coast region. They have qualified for states in August but unfortunately the dates fall on the same weekend as state volleyball, so they won't be progressing any further...an amazing achievement! Both the junior and senior girls also won Division 2! Both open girls and open boys went undefeated in all games with the junior team only losing one game, by 1 point, but still taking out the competition! A huge well done to the students and a great 'thank you' to Ms Vernados for her coaching and support.

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) did something special the other day, staging a 'flashmob' in the school 'Sails' area outside the tuckshop, entertaining everyone with an energetic performance. Great work SRC and to Ms Ross and Ms Whybird for their leadership!!

More well dones to Ms Ferrara and Ms Myers for their coordination of the school display at the Emerald Show, showcasing some of the work of our students.

I would like to remind everyone that mobile phones are not to be used at Emerald High and that taking photos or filming students or staff at school, at school events or in school uniform is not acceptable and the consequences are significant. All members of our school community should be able to attend school free from being photographed or filmed.

Thank you again everyone for your ongoing support of our amazing school!

With will one can do anything.

Have a fantastic fortnight

From the Head of Year 7.

We are approaching the half-way point of Year 7! I am very impressed, once again, with how well our Year 7 Cohort have settled into life at Emerald State High School.

One of the highlights of this cohort has been their participation in a range of curricular and extra-curricular activities! It has been fantastic to see such a large number of our students representing the school proudly in the arts, sports and academics, whether that be through joining in in the lunchtime clubs, a school or club sport, instrumental music, or readers cup!

As part of our 3Ps (Polite, Prepared, Participate!) at Emerald State High School, I would like to remind you to ensure that your child is coming prepared to school with the correct equipment and uniform. It is the expectation in Year 7 that our students are bringing a book and pencil case to each class, which has all of the necessary equipment (pens, pencils, ruler, glue, scissors, etc). As winter is still upon us, it is important that our Year 7 students are wearing the correct uniform, meaning the correct jumper. If a student is wearing the incorrect uniform, it is the expectation that they will follow the school process, by going to the uniform room.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions regarding anything Year 7, you can contact via email or by phoning the school on 4988 2222.

Regards
Miss. Michelle Watkin
HOY – Year 7

From the Head of Year 8.

It is hard to believe we are nearly half-way through the year and semester one is almost finished. The school has the annual SHINES show coming up, being run by our SRC. This will occur on Monday 20th June, look out for notices about this event. This week, we are also starting the CQ Pet Rescue food drive, so please send in food items including dog and cat food, pet toys, clean blankets and towels.

Report cards will be emailed to parents and carers at the end of Term 2. Please take the time to discuss your child’s results with them and make goals in relation to how to improve in Semester 2. See the SMART goal framework in relation to how to set goals moving forward.

Please also ensure your child is following the school uniform policy and presenting in the correct uniform.

Please reach out if you do have questions and I will endeavour to answer them or point you in the right direction to those that will be able to assist.

If you are going away over the holidays, I hope you have a safe and relaxing break!

Regards
Mr. Leon Coromandel
HOY – Year 8

From the Head of Year 9.

Happy Week 8! As the end of the term approaches, students are reminded to follow the 3Ps, both inside and outside of the classroom. As assessment time is just around the corner, students are advised to check their assessment planners and see what is due, to ensure they are handing their work in on time. Homework Club is running on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3-4pm, for students to seek help with their work. Please make sure they have asked their teacher to attend, so that they have someone to assist them.

With the cooler weather approaching it is a timely reminder that students are required to wear the correct uniform.

The uniform requirements are as follows:

All year:

A)  Closed in shoes with laces
B)  ESHS shorts OR PLAIN black mid – length shorts with NO logos or symbols
C)  ESHS polo shirt
D)  ESHS bucket hat

Please see photos below of correct uniform items:

Can be purchased from the ESHS uniform shop:

Winter:

A)  ESHS tracksuit pants OR PLAIN black tracksuit pants with NO logos or symbols
B)  ESHS jumpers OR PLAIN black jumper that does not have a hood or logo/symbol of any kind.
C)  NO beanies and headwear

Students are reminded that every day counts in their education. If students are away, please ensure that the school is contacted and the absence is explained.

HOY – Year 9

From the Maths team.

Firstly, I would like to thank parents/caregivers for their valued support to our school.

Term 2 is in full swing and going by quickly.

You would have received your child’s interim reports by now. If you have not received it, please contact our office. They will be able to organise one for you. The semester reports will be sent out in Week 10 of this term.

The reports present a good opportunity to have discussions with your child and their teachers regarding your child’s progress. Parent/teacher interviews were held earlier this term. If you did not make it, you can always arrange a time with the teachers to meet up later.

We in the Maths department are using the data gathered from Term 1 to work on gaps your child may have had during the term. Work is being differentiated for your child, to ensure greater chances of success.

To reiterate our department’s expectations for our students outside of school hours: the expectation is that the students will spend around 20 minutes studying, 3 to 4 times a week.

Homework Club occurs on Mondays and Wednesdays (3-4pm). Homework Club can provide the facility for your child to get further one-on-one attention if required.

Importance of Goal Setting

I would encourage you to set goals with your child. Ensure to have the goal written down. There has been a lot of research done in Neuroscience that suggests, writing down a goal, as opposed to simply saying it, increases the chances of one achieving the goal. Below is an interesting article on goal setting. It is a 4minute read only.

We have a busy remainder of Term 2 ahead of us. Here’s to a successful Term 2.

From the HPE team.

Recently, we have seen the weather cool down, however, it is still important to remember sun safety and we continue to encourage students to bring and wear hats during our HPE practical lessons. We also take this opportunity to encourage water bottles, although the weather is cooler, water bottles are still important to maintain hydration.

The junior grades have been participating in Athletics (7), Touch Football (8) and Court Games (9) as the curriculum sport in practical lessons for Term 2. The focus is on ball skills, knowing the rules of the game and game play. In theory lessons, the theme for Years 7-9 has been on alcohol and drugs (covering topics such as caffeine to cigarettes to alcohol) and the external factors that may influence adolescent choices. Assessment will be during Week 8 and Week 9 of the term.

Senior HPE and Rec classes have been covering a wide range of topics. Seniors are starting IA3 assessment. Year 11 are rolling on the greens at the Emerald Bowls Club. Year 12 Rec are working on Tournament planning, implementation and analysis.

Well done to all at the Athletics Carnival which was held last Friday. It was a great day for all. Keep an eye out for the photos.

Our school has also been involved in a number of competitions outside of school, these include the Karen Murphy competition, which was played in Rockhampton last week, Vicki Wilson being played in Yeppoon this week and the interschool rugby league match against Marist recently occurred as well. Well done to the staff and students who are involved in all these sporting opportunities.

As the end of the term approaches and assessment looms, we ask that if your student will be absent for any length of time to please contact your student’s teacher.

皆さん、こんにちは!

At this point in the term, languages classes are now in the midst of assessment time, so make sure that you are prepared with all your necessary equipment and on time for every class and take as much notes as you can!

The Languages program this term has students studying a variety of topics across Years 7 – 12. These include:

Year 7 –“ゆる(yuru)キャラ(KYARA) – Mascot”

In this unit, students will be introduced to several unique characters (also known as Mascots) in Japan. In addition, they will also get to design a mascot that represent either themselves, their community, or Emerald State High for their assessment! Throughout the unit, students will understand the functionality of adjective, nouns and the application of Japanese grammar when it comes to describing an object.

Year 8 – “Hobbies and Free time”

In this unit, students will be given the opportunity to share and compare, based on what they do in their spare time, extra-curricular activities after school with their peers, as well as expressing what they like and dislike. In addition, students will also get to understand the functionality of the three different types of Japanese script and its application in Japanese language.

Year 9 and 10 – “What is youth subculture?”

In this unit, students will discuss different youth subcultures in Australia and Japan. Additionally, they will also analyse and present information about youth subcultures in Japan to generate thorough discussion as to how it differs in comparison to Australia’s youth subculture. Students are also required to reflect based on their personal identity, in relation to the presented youth subcultures and discuss cultural values evident in youth subcultures. Finally, students will explore a range of ideas in terms of family in various culture as the term progresses.

Year 11 – “Lifestyle and Education”

In these units, students will discuss, explore and analyse the lifestyles of Australian and Japanese people and families. In addition, they will also be given opportunities to understand the cultural traditions of Japan and Australia. Furthermore, students will also compare the qualities of education and its importance in the perspective of Australian students versus Japanese students through data and reports.

At this stage, Junior assessments for LOTE are given at the start of Week 7 and are due in Week 9 of this term.

The best way to improve achievement is short but regular review of vocabulary. It is highly recommended that you also use your spare time to learn Japanese writing symbols and new vocabulary, by regularly using Quizlet/Quizziz. Additionally, book work is important as always! Neat handwriting and well organised notes are the greatest way to best achieve a desirable outcome.

If at any time you, or your child needs assistance outside of class, come to J BLOCK/ RESCOURCE CENTRE staffrooms – all of our Japanese teachers are more than willing to help, and can organise a time!

Neill 先生(sensei) on behalf of the Languages faculty.

From the Humanities team.

With only 3 weeks of school remaining in Term 2, students are now well into their assessment tasks for Humanities.

Year 7 Geography is currently completing their surveys on liveability around the school, focusing on energy use and access to shade, and developing action plans to deal with their chosen issue. The assessment for this will be completed over the course of Weeks 5 to 9. A short response exam is also being completed this Week for 7 History, with a focus on Ancient China.

Year 8 Geography is currently completing an exciting task, where they investigate an earthquake, and design, test and evaluate a building to withstand such quakes, using known technologies. In Year 8 History students are completing a Viking analysis task and museum walk.

9 Geography is currently focusing on Biomes and Food Security, and have been working on a data report since Week 4. Drafts were due in Week 7 and the final copy is due in their third lesson of Week 8. Year 9 History will also be completing part of their assessment this week, evaluating sources on the impact the White Australia Policy had on the nation after Federation.

Year 10 History this term has a focus on Indigenous Rights and students are currently revising for their exam, which will be held in Week 9.

Senior Humanities students who do Legal Studies, Geography, Ancient and Modern History are also gearing up for their big tour in Term 3, which promises to be an excellent and insightful learning experience. A reminder that payments for this trip are due by 24th of June.
